Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along: Installment #4

Aug 25th 2023

Welcome to Installment #4 of Kim Diehl’s Mystery Stitch-Along! Read below to find directions for cutting and piecing fabric.

Cutting

From each of 6 assorted bitty bricks, cut:

  • 1 strip, 3" × 10 1⁄2"; crosscut into 2 squares, 3" × 3"

(combined total of 12). Cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (total of 4; combined total of 24). Organize the triangles by print into 6 Pinwheel sets.

From the assorted cream scraps, cut:

  • 12 squares, 3" × 3"; cut each square in half diagonally once to yield 2 triangles (combined total of 24). Note: For a scrappier look, cut additional squares from more cream prints; you’ll have leftover triangles that can be discarded.

Instructions

  1. Using Simple Whatnots III, refer to the This and That project and follow “1 Pinwheel Block” beginning on page 68 to piece one Pinwheel block from each Pinwheel set for a total of six Pinwheel blocks. Note: Disregard the measurements given for the half-square-triangle units and finished Pinwheel blocks in the book; for our mystery sampler, the units will finish slightly larger.
  2. Use a rotary cutter and an acrylic ruler to trim the blocks to 4 1⁄2" square, including the seam allowances.
