Quilted Coats

Quilted Coats

Craft book editing is a job full of temptation. It's quite difficult to spend your days reading and learning from some of the most lovely and exciting textile artists without wanting to try their projects for yourself. Working on Kathleen McVeigh and Dale Donaldson's upcoming title, Reclaimed Quilts, Sew Modern Clothing & Accessories from Vintage Textiles was no exception.

Quilt coats have been popular for a few years, and I've always been an excited spectator with an eye out for a thrifted quilt of my own. Finally, while working on this fantastic title, the stars aligned, and I thrifted two quilts!

Kathleen and Dale include so many fantastic techniques that allowed me to successfully make my own mini collection of quilted garments. Cutting into a gorgeous and historical piece of art can be scary, and they gave me the tools to feel confident. Both quilts I thrifted were hand-stitched from start to finish, scrappy, and completely unique. I used everything I learned in this book to clean and prepare the quilts, mend them, and then place my garment pattern pieces in the perfect positions to make use of the quilt's original elements. In the end, I made two matching coats and a pullover.

Some lovely aspects included after learning from this book:

  • Using the quilt's original scalloped hem and binding
  • Modifying the sewing process for working with thick textiles
  • Identifying the best way to arrange the garment pattern pieces on the quilts

This is the must-have guide to making garments from quilted and vintage textiles!
