Class Description:
Create a Digital Fiber Mini Quilt with Wen! Participants will print a personal photograph on inkjet-ready fiber and create a mini 12˝´ 12˝ digital quilt with a new edge treatment that uses paint. You’ll also learn Wen’s protective coating technique.
If offered for a 2-day class, add:
Mount your finished quilt and learn innovative segmented quilt design. Plus, try a variety of medium enhancements!
Class Length:
1 or 2 days. 2-day class includes segmented quilt instructions, edge finishing with paint, medium enhancement, and mounting.
Class Supply List:
- Required text: Wen Redmond’s Digital Fiber Art
- Various light-colored fabrics
- Paper-backed fusible webbing
- 14˝x 14˝ fabric for base
- Clear inkAID
- 2˝ chip brush
- Plastic to protect work surface
- Sewing machine and supplies
- Scissors, rotary cutter, and mat
- Iron and ironing pad
- 14˝ x 14˝ felt
- 14˝x 14˝ backing fabric with enough to make a hanging tube
- Computer or USB stick with several photo selections
- Printer with USB stick compatibility (if you chose that option)
- Hair dryer
Additional items for 2 days
- Hand-sewing supplies: pearl cotton, buttonhole thread, or similar heavier thread to sew segments together and needle to match the size of chosen thread
- 1 or 2 colors of acrylic paint
- Satin varnish
- Specialty mediums
- 12˝ x 12˝ canvas to mount the finished quilt on
- Sobo glue
- Black paint or gesso
- Hangers for canvas (see p. 117 in book for photo of hangers)
Classroom Preparation:
Room with water for media clean up. Each student will need table space and access to an outlet for their sewing machine and equipment.
Class Agenda:
Creating background
1. Apply inkAID to chosen fabrics. Dry with hair dryer and iron.
2. Fuse both sides of 14˝x 14˝ base with fusible webbing—leave paper on the back!
3. Peel the top and create a collage with prepared fabrics by puzzle fitting them onto base. Save the peeled fusible paper.
TIP: You can also fuse lightweight fabrics over the top of the base, but make sure to keep it from getting too thick to run through the printer.
Printing
1. Print collage using chosen photo on USB stick or computer. It may be necessary to divide fabric and digital photo into 2 sections, each 6˝ x 12˝.
2. Allow ink to dry for a few minutes, cover with the leftover, peeled fusible paper as protection (shiny side down), and iron.
Quilting
1. Peel off the back fusible paper that served as carrier sheet and iron on to backing felt.
2. Back with backing fabric and quilt.
3. Quilt and machine sew edges.
4. Add rod pocket.
5. Apply paint to edges (see p. 118 in book for directions).
Applying protective satin varnish
(Demo for one day. 2-day class will apply varnish.)

There is no need to add backing fabric before quilting when mounting onto canvas. See p. 115 in book for directions.
1. Create a simple interior cutting layout and cut quilt with rotary cutter.
2. Finish edgeswith metallic paint (see p. 118 in book for directions).
3. Hand sew sections together and mount on canvas.
4. Apply protective satin varnish and medium enhancements. See p. 112 in book for medium enhancements
