Paula Doyle

Despite being born in Massachusetts, Paula Doyle was raised in Brazil, the daughter of Methodist missionary teachers. Her mother taught her how to use a sewing machine at the age of nine, and she made her first patchwork cushion at the age of ten under instruction from her maternal grandmother. After a career in banking and corporate training, Paula moved to London and married Mark Doyle. Their son, Jonathan, was born in 1990 during a seven-year overseas posting to the United States and Canada, which is when quilting became a passion for Paula.

She learned how to make her first sampler quilt in a class at La Maison de Calico, a quilt shop in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. Over the next few years she took more classes, moved to Connecticut, and eventually started to teach patchwork and quilting classes at the local YWCA, at the local quilt guild, and even to a group of nuns in a monastery. On her return to England in 1995 she opened Green Mountain Quilt Shop, where she continued to teach quilting and patchwork classes and to design quilts and quilt patterns. After thirteen years in business, Paula closed the shop to allow her to concentrate solely on designing quilt patterns and teaching. She now works in her garden studio (Green Mountain Quilt Studio) on the banks of the Thames in Surrey, England.
