Ripples Quilt

Class Description
Serene koi appear to float beneath the rippled surface of water in this easy applique quilt that makes a big impact.
-Quilt top project is appropriate for beginners and more experienced quilters
-Project teaches basic machine appliqué using fusible web
-Class could be adapted to teach my signature embroidery-finished appliqué technique
-Class could also be adapted to teach basic machine quilting using a walking foot
Class Length
3 hours: if class includes making, fusing, & machine stitching the appliqués and marking the quilt top
4 hours: if class will also include teaching embroidery-finished appliqué technique
2 3-hour sessions: if class will also include basting & basic machine quilting
Class Supply List
-Required text: Modern Appliqué Illusions by Casey York
-Printed pattern templates for Ripples quilt (see page 13)
-Background and appliqué fabrics (see page 74 for yardage requirements)
-Lightweight double-sided fusible web (3 1/2 yards at 15" wide)
-Invisible nylon or polyester thread that works with student's machine (recommended: Aurifil Invisible nylon thread or Superior Clear Mono-Poly)
-White cotton thread for bobbin
-Scissors (student will be cutting fabric AND paper with these)
-Fine tipped permanent marker
-Removable fabric marker and small ruler for marking quilting lines
-Sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch
-Basic sewing supplies
-Optional: embroidery floss to match each appliqué fabric and hand embroidery needle (if teaching embroidery-finished appliqué)
-Optional: Batting, backing, binding fabric (if teaching basic machine quilting; see page 74 for yardage)
TIP: Decide in advance whether students will need to print and bring their own templates, or whether you will provide them. It can help to print a couple extra sets of templates for use in class in case a student forgets or prints them incorrectly.
Classroom Preparation
Each student will need the following:
-Machine sewing area
-Tracing and Layout area
-Basting area (if teaching basting and basic machine quilting)
Students can share cutting and pressing stations

Refer to pages 72-77 for instructions and placement diagram for the Ripples quilt. Refer to pages 9-27 for basic information on techniques and materials
1. Discuss materials and process for fusible web appliqué
2. Trace pattern templates and make appliqués
3. Arrange appliqués on background according to Placement Diagram (page 75)
4. Stitch appliqués to background
5. Optional: teach how to finish appliqué edges with embroidery (pages 20-22)
6. Mark quilt top for quilting according to instructions (pages 76-77)
7. Optional: layer, baste, and machine quilt (pages 23-27)
