Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting Class Plan

This class is designed to be a 3-part class or a one-day 8-hour class. With an optional fourth class.

Class Description:
In this class, you will learn all the basics of free-motion quilting, including choosing the correct thread, batting, and fabric to the basics of stitching on your quilt top. Then, you'll have a chance to try your skills with more than 50 illustrated tutorials for stitching allover quilting, quilting borders and sashing, and adding background fillers as well as quilting on individual blocks and appliqué.

Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced

Supply list:

  • Required text: Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting by Natalia Bonner
  • Each person will need a large area where they feel comfortable machine quilting
  • Sewing machine with a hopping foot and the ability to drop the feed-dogs
  • High quality thread (I recommend So Fine by Superior Threads for the top and Bottom Line by Superior Threads for the bobbin)
  • Scissors
  • Top stitch or quilting needle
  • Plain paper and pencil

Class Preparation:

  • Each person will need to prepare 18 - 20" x 20" quilt sandwiches, one with an appliqué flower
    • Baste together with spray baste or pin baste
    • I would recommend that beginning quilt sandwiches are made from solid fabrics so you can see your stitching more clearly
    • Use high quality batting (I recommend Hobbs 80-20 batting)
