Finding New Ways to Express Myself

Finding New Ways to Express Myself

Posted by Lorraine Woodruff-Long on Apr 19th 2024

This week I’m visiting my daughter in Boston for her spring break (she’s a 7th & 8th grade public school math teacher - we’re very proud of her!)

So much of what I create requires a sewing machine - it’s nice to have a portable project. Cutting out letters for a new commentary quilt is the perfect travel project for me. I prepped and traced letters on fabric before I left and can cut them out whenever I have the time and the space. In this case, on an Amtrak train for some mother-daughter time in New York City.

I’ve been feeling the need to create something a bit more uplifting and inspirational than the subversive and, at times, caustic text used in my commentary quilts (But don’t worry! Still a lot of those left in me!)

Nevertheless, current events facing our country and the world have me seeking some new messages and approaches for quilts using text. I’ve always been inspired by this quote from Margaret Mead. Stay tuned for this WIP:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

Sigh.
