Interview with Laura Wasilowski

Interview with Laura Wasilowski

Posted by Deirdre Quirk on Feb 6th 2017

Please give a warm welcome to Laura Wasilowski, who we're interviewing on the blog today! She is amazing fabric artist, dyer, and the author of Fanciful Stitches, Colorful Quilts. She first started sewing in 4-H, went on to earn a degree in costume design, and now runs her own business, Artfabrik.

Where do you find your quilting or sewing inspiration?

I'm inspired by stories of my family, home, and places I've lived. These stories are translated into cloth and depict a whimsical kind of history of my life.

What is something we might not know about you?

I once had a pet grasshopper. It was a short-lived relationship, but as a child, I was sure we'd be friends forever.

What was your favorite part of the book writing or production process?

I enjoy the challenge of finding the right words to describe my art form: fused art quilts or hand-embroidered vignettes. It makes me a better teacher and helps me understand my art.

What are your go-to colors?

Blue, of course!

What projects are you working on right now?

Each day I assign myself the challenge of making a small composition with fused fabric scraps. In the evenings, I hand embroider small pieces and play with stitches.

Where do you shop for fabric?

In my basement. I'm a dyer and have a lot of colorful fabric at hand.

Thank you, Laura!
