Hiding Fabric in Plain Sight

Hiding Fabric in Plain Sight

Sep 15th 2021

A few of weeks ago, we talked about fabric storage solutions that make it easy to find your fabric. But what if you wanted a more clandestine storage solution? What are some less obvious places to store you stash? Consider these:

  • Car – Storing fabric in your car is especially effective if you are the only one who uses it, but what if you have a family? That family trip to the ice cream place could get awkward when little Susie has to sit on ten yards of Hoffman batiks. It turns out, that is what those pull-down cargo shades in the back of your SUV are for: concealing fabric… and to think you thought they were for camping!
  • Hanging in the Closet – You know those clothes hangers that pants and skirts come on, the ones with the two big clips? They are excellent for storing fabric in the clothes closet, especially special fabrics that wrinkle or crease easily like velvet or jacquard. Just gently fold your fabric the long way in fourths, clip the two corners and hang. Sandwich between your old interview suits (you know you are never using those again), and no one but you will know its there. Until you forget about your clever scheme and tear apart the house looking for that special fabric. Ask me how I know.
  • Laundry Basket – Since no one does laundry but you, fold up a whole bunch of fabric and stash it in a big plastic laundry basket. Add some decoy clean laundry on top and that fabric could go untouched for months, even years! Pro tip to parents of small children, this also makes an excellent solution for hiding Christmas presents from the little peekers. I did that for years and the kids never found their presents, and it was not for lack of trying!
  • Paper Grocery Bags – This one is especially useful for getting fabric into the house undetected. Put your fabric on the bottom of the paper grocery bag and stack the food items on top. Make sure you put the fabric in the bag with the canned beets and other unmentionables because the kids and husband will immediately go for the bag with the cookies and chips.

Just by applying a little ingenuity mixed with a dash of treachery, you will never run out of places to store your fabric!
