Announcing the Free-Motion Quilting Idea App!

Posted by Amanda Murphy on Jan 29th 2016

Hi there,

Hi everyone! My name is Amanda Murphy and I’m so excited to be here on C&T’s blog today talking about my new Free-Motion Quilting Idea App! It is a companion piece to the Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book and the Free-Motion Quilting Idea Sampler, and it is all new in the App Store for your iPad and iPhone: Free-Motion Quilting Idea App - C&T Publishing, Inc.

When I first came to C&T with this idea, I was pretty sure they would turn me down. I mean, I loved the idea of an app that uses video and animation to show users how to quilt free-motion patterns, but it was a pretty tall order. I didn’t know where to begin–I just knew that it was a product I’d want to have and thought the timing was right in the market. My pitch might have even started with, “So you probably won’t want to do this but…” (Which is definitely not how one is supposed to start a pitch, but they were too polite to point that out.)

The Animation Menu

So… imagine my surprise when C&T said they’d do it–with a companion book! My first thought was, “Oh my goodness I’m so excited!” and my second thought was, “I have a LOT of drawings to do!” And you have probably seen those drawings if you have seen the Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book. (For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it is basically made up entirely of drawings that show you, step by step, how to form many different free-motion patterns and then apply them to blocks, sashing, and borders. A reference tool to keep by your machine, really.)

These same free-motion designs form the basis of the App, but in it you can actually see each of the allover patterns animated and many of them stitched out by me on the BERNINA Q Series !

On the app you can actually see this paisley design being drawn out!

Or you can watch me quilt it on a video…

I’m a spokesperson for the BERNINA Q Series, and the wonderful people over at BERNINA were so helpful in making this project a reality. They put up with me and filmed all the video in Chicago on their wonderful machines. And then the great people at C&T animated my drawings and put it all together. So THANK YOU to all the people at BERNINA and C&T who made this project possible! (I know there were a lot of you!)

The Video Library

I hope all of you quilters out there find the App really useful, because nothing makes me happier than helping others unleash their creativity. The quilting community is really amazing.

(If you are interested in being part of my Facebook group for people who are getting inspiration from the book, app, and/or the companion sampler , please join us.)

I hope you really love the App!

Happy New Year and happy quilting!
