“Midnight Quilts” by Lerlene Nevaril is a good book, where all of the quilts have black backgrounds.  Nevaril begins the book with construction techniques, and then presents 11 quilts, that are mostly traditional.  I was surprised when she talked about making a 1930’s quilt with a black background, since those quilts mostly had white or pale backgrounds. We all know how traditional Amish quilts shine with their black backgrounds and bright colors.  Midnight Quilts uses this idea, black and bright, making these quilts gleam with similar results. This is a good book for almost any quilter wanting to mix things up.  Looks like fun!

Black is the New NeutralBook Review: That's what Lerlene Nevaril claims in her new book, Midnight Quilts, and she may be right because these quilts are gorgeous. I'm the hugest fan of white muslin backgrounds, but this book has inspired me to stretch my wings a bit. None of the quilts looks particularly difficult -- the real razzle dazzle comes from the color choices. There are eleven patterns, along with a gallery of projects that provide even more inspiration. (And my one complaint about the book is that the quilt I most loved, which is pictured on the copyright page came from the gallery section and isn't one of the projects included.)

This book has an interest concept, taking regular pieced quilt patterns and using black background instead of the light ones.  In the beginning of the book she show some examples of the same quilt made with a light background then with a black and the different looks are very evident.  I love her use of modern fabrics in the borders to set the quilt off, the combination of these two techniques make the quits REALLY sparkle.  It has made me look at dark backgrounds a little differently with more possibilities.  I think some of us quilters, think dark background drape but if we open up to the possibility of darker colors we could get what we want.  Not only black backgrounds work but I can see dark navy or even dark reds making quilts sparkle.  This book let my imagination run and I have a quilt planned which I was going to use a light background but have changed my mind to dark.  All the Midnight quits show in this book are striking and would be one to add to your collection.  If your work seems to be in a runt get this book and go dark!

Amazing how the colors "pop" on a black background!  Lerlene Nevaril's instructions are very easy to follow.  I especially enjoy her technique of combining blocks with "hidden" blocks, which are a simplified version of the original block--makes for a more complex-looking quilt when it's really easier!

I have always been a fan of the strength of contrast create by using a predominantly black background and this new set of ideas will show off bright and solid fabrics alike in a gem-like fashion. There are 11 sparkling projects to turn night into light and the handy cutting charts speed up the tedious cutting element of preparation so that you can get right on with the sewing aspect. According to this book, black is the new neutral!
