“…Absolutly gorgeous quilts, real educational substance, and something different make this book a winner. It's not whether you should buy it, but how fast can you get in on your credit card!”

Review By: Judie Bellingham,   BellaOnline - April 13, 2009
"I’ve always had a penchant for William Morris designs. In fact, many years ago, I found a picture of a linen tea towel in a women’s magazine, with an all over pattern attributed to William Morris.  I’ve had this piece of paper pinned to my cork board for far longer than I can remember, with the intention of making a quilt with this pattern as inspiration.
Well, that was the idea. But I’ve always felt that the patterns of William Morris were too BIG, too COMPLICATED, too VAST and too OVERWHELMING to be able to put into a quilt.
It’s a good thing I’ve procrastinated on this, because in the mean time Australian quilter Michele Hill has taken all the “ouch and angst” out of the process and has presented the world with a William Morris inspired quilt book that will become a “must have” in the private library of all quilters the world over. The book is titled William Morris in Appliqué and as far as I can tell is unique in its form and content in its subject matter – William Morris designs.
What Michele has done is to take the essence of the patterns of William Morris and created the most wonderful appliqué designs, reflecting the magnificence and wonderment of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century, and the incredible balance of the William Morris design.
C&T Publishing have given Michele her head when designing this publication.  No effort has been spared to present to the quilter, both newly acquainted with the genre of appliqué, and those that have a been needle turning for ever, the most beautifully detailed set of instructions for re-creating these absolutely mind-blowing quilts.
Michele spends the first part of her book detailing the life and times of William Morris and his very strong connection to Australia – especially the state of South Australia.  Michele explains her journey of discovery in William Morris design and how she was able to use inspiration from these designs in her own versions.
There are six beautiful creations depicting the most glorious adaptations of William Morris patterns, and each set of instructions have the most gorgeous photographs and diagrams.  It is a joy to just flip through page after page.
Every one of the patterns that Michele presents are achievable because of the detailed instructions and the considerable insets that show magnified detail.
The pattern sheets that accompany this publication have been designed by a quilter – of this I’m sure.  The patterns have been set out clearly and are easy to find and follow.
Finally, at the end of the book, Michele takes the time to list the Bibliography, together with and a great list of collections and places to visit and most helpfully, a list of websites – all to do with the William Morris phenomenon.
I can thoroughly recommend this book to all quilters, no matter where you are in your quilting journey – you will eventually want to make something from this delightful publication."

"Some of you may know that I live in an Arts & Crafts style house built around 1914.  Kirk and I loved the Arts & Crafts style before we even knew what it was.  I lovingly brought our house back to period with wallpaper that was designed using the old patterns and stencils true to period.  We have Stickley reissue furniture in both the living room and parlor (the Stickley Company used the pattern that Gustav Stickley first used to make his furniture--and labeled them so that in generations to come, the first will be distinguished from the reissue).  The only antique piece of Stickley furniture I have is a sewing rocker made by Charles Stickley.
You can imagine how thrilled I was when the book, William Morris in Applique came out.  William Morris led the Arts & Crafts movement in England.  I fell in love with the Kelmscott quilt taken from an embroidered bed covering in Kelmscott..his home.  We will be offering it as a Block of the Month beginning in August.  We're waiting that long so that we can use some of the new line of William Morris fabric that Barbara Brackman is designing for Moda--which is supposed to arrive in July...
I've decided to fuse my blocks rather than doing them by hand.  I took a class from Harriet Hargrave several years ago where she taught invisible machine applique.  It works pretty well.  Besides, some of the flowers have tiny little thorns on the stems--and I wasn't about to try that by hand!
There are actually only eight different flowers.  Since I have this problem with instant gratification--I couldn't wait to make a few of the blocks...The background fabric is from the St. James collection by RJR.  I've ordered tons of it so there will be enough for everyone to have the same!  I can't wait to finish this quilt!"

"Quilts are so wonderfully cozy and warm. I love them. My dog even has two of his own and thinks they are the greatest. Recently, a friend told me about a book called "William Morris In Applique" by Michele Hill. Michele is an award winning quilt artist and teacher from Australia who fell in love with William Morris designs and translated them into quilting projects. Her work is stunning, textured, and intricate. The colors pop off of the background like William Morris's stained glass windows. The book is filled with beautiful pictures of her work and includes full size patterns so you can duplicate these gorgeous pieces for your own home. Her instructions are clear and include pictures to help you achieve good results on your own. These designs could be modified to your color palate and would work well in many different styles of decor from Colonial to Victorian, Ecclectic, and beyond. I'm going to start with something simple like a pillow and work my way up. The dog won't be sleeping on any of these beauties! Happy Quilting."

“…is a beautiful book. The blending of the work of William Morris with Michele's interpretation of the designs result in gorgeous appliqué patterns and quilts. You will definitely want to try your hand at one of these beauties and the instructions, photos and six projects included in the book will be right there to help you along. The project patterns are printed in full size and Michele shares her technique for fusible, machine and hand appliqué. Embroidery stitches are also covered as well as everything you need to know about finishing a quilt including quilting the quilt…”

"This is such a great book I can see myself using some of these applique motifs to make pillows or add to another quilt as well."
