"I wanted to tell you both that your dvd is excellent...I sat down to practice my quilting designs, as I do every morning(I'm a longarm quilter). Normally I watch the news, but decided to put your dvd on instead. As I listened and kind of watched, I noticed that I went from drawing quilting designs to thumbnail sketches of some of the ideas and inspirations I had pulled from the classes. I soon stopped and decided to give the dvd full attention...
After watching it, I started the dvd again and more sketches and ideas came pouring out. This time more focused and with a theme. Most of the ideas and sketches are dealing with the impact of the teacher and the other students upon me. I guess, you might say I had a paradigm shift in thinking. Everytime I play the dvd new ideas come forward, some of the older ones are refined and rethought. The dvd seems to be a trigger for me. The design principles are not new, but the way both of you are conversing on the dvd is helping my mind to sort through all the information I gathered the week before and this last year, as I have been focusing more on learning the principles of art, drawing, design, and color instead of relying on just instinct.
Your dvd has been a catalyst for me, thank you for making it."

"I enjoyed this DVD very much. I had purchased Jane & Elin's book, Art Quilt Workbook, that this DVD is based upon, and consider the book to be one of the best I've ever used. I took a class with Jane this year at Sisters Oregon Quilt Week, and had a marvelous time. She is wonderful in person, so having the DVD is like being back in the classroom with her. Both ladies have great ideas, which they take the time to explain concisely, while exhibiting the techniques. Jane and Elin are quite accomplished artists in their own right, and that fact is well reflected in this DVD. Buy it. You'll love it."

"Jane Dávila and Elin Waterston have taken the wonderful lessons from their 'Art Quilt Workbook' and brought them to life. It was especially inspiring to watch Elin sketch an onion and garlic still life. Seeing an 'expert' make mistakes, erase and try again gives viewers the courage to try sketching for themselves. The basics of color, design, working in series, making a fused collage and using found objects are all covered. Watching the DVD is like having a workshop in your own home, plus you can watch it on replay any time you wish. I also enjoyed getting a peek into Jane’s studio and seeing how she organizes all of her fabrics and supplies..."

"...The title of this DVD is perfect for what you get! We are at home with expert teachers in their studio, and they teach the basics from an artist’s point of view and vocabulary, rather than a traditional quilter’s point of view or vocabulary. It is exactly what I needed but didn’t realize until I watched it...I love art quilts and the freedom and opportunities they offer me as the designer. I love the fabrics they use, including the hand-dyed and stamped fabrics. Beads, yarns, laces, photos and other embellishments are fun to use, but in this DVD, they discuss even more kinds of embellishments and how to make them fabric friendly when they come from nature...I liked watching while hearing about how they used the artist's decision-making process in terms of the layout or composition. They were using design principles an artist uses to make choices and changes, so that their piece had the final look they were aiming for. The compositions are multifaceted, and there are many choices to make. Nothing is right or wrong, but your vision is the goal. There are many design principles to consider ... they show examples of each, and then they show finished compositions of combinations...I recommend this DVD for people who are beginners to art quilt making, since it covers the basics of design principles needed in designing and making an artistic composition from fabric.
I also recommend you watch this DVD in sections. The menu presents chapters and subchapters, which makes it easy to know when to switch off and easy to find where you left off. I have watched it twice; some parts three times. Would I have read the book twice? Some parts three times, probably more. With new material and ideas presented, the book may not have been as clear as the DVD.
Overall, I really enjoyed it, including the teachers' personalities. It was just like being in a girlfriend’s studio; words were made-up words, the ‘girls” were funny and upbeat, errors were made and corrected, and everyone was happy to spend the day together. This is a very nice pick for design basics in art quilt design and making."

"...It is one of the DVDs in their At Home With the Experts Series and is 100 minutes long.
Let's start with the technical aspects of the DVD. The sound and video are excellent as are the demonstrations...Both of the hosts are great teachers. Jane's talk on the elements of design was more informative and easier to understand than discussions I have seen on other DVDs or in books that I have read. Her ideas for what to keep in a sketchbook were innovative. Many of them I have not seen in other books and DVDs and I will use them in my sketchbook. I learned a few new things about design that I did not know before because her examples of each element were in small quilts that she had made. Elin's demonstration on how to draw and create a pattern was, likewise, the best I have ever seen. Since I am not an art quilter, I will use this information in my colored pencil drawings...if you are a beginning art quilter, you will learn a lot here...If you are a beginning art quilter you will want to see this DVD. Jane and Elin take you through the entire process of making a quilt, from inspiration to binding. Check it out."
