“Permission not to follow the rules can be freeing! [this book] is brilliantly thought out! In fact, it is so well thought and explained, that when you use this book, Becky and Linda encourage you not to follow the directions! Can you imagine that? How wonderful! There are no rules to break! The book does include directions for eight fabulous-looking quilts with the Piece O' Cake style but the quilter is encouraged to cut and sew without measuring or matching. The results can be stunning. Becky said it is 'about the process of working in a freer, more organic manner.' Think about the soft, yet energetic appeal of the Gee's Bend quilts and you'll get the idea. Start a class and make everyone sign an 'I don't measure' pledge, and share the laughs and the path to quilting freedom.”

"I was lucky enough to have the mailman deliver me a very special present this week – Piece O’ Cake’s new book, Applique Outside the Lines... I have been anxiously awating this book for a few months now, and as with all Piece O’ Cake’s books, it did not disappoint! I have all of the Piece O’ Cake books...The latest book is a bit of a departure for the Piece O’ Cake team. Where in the past their appliqué designs have been quite structured and focussed heavily on accuracy and symmetry, the quilts in this book are very free form. Quilters are encouraged to be inventive and free with the patterns, interpreting them in your own way. Also encouraged is putting away your ruler and cutting more flowing lines to relax the linear aspects of your quilts and create organic blocks. The front of the book has interesting tips on choosing your fabrics and creating contrast, using a design wall, and how to break the rules! Although as Becky points out, it’s not about being sloppy, it’s about making more interesting lines. There are so many beautiful projects to choose from in this book. I think though that I have to head straight for Leaves in the Breeze. Something about these wonderful  angled stems and textured backgrounds, (and the green drawer in my stash!) is calling me. Hmmm, I wonder when I can fit this in the project list…."

"This is an outstanding book.  Excellent for quilters, for those that like to do applique, and it is even perfect for those that have never quilted or tried applique.  It is such a delightful book I think it would also make a great coffee table book.   I guess you can say I love, love, love it.  I definitely recommend this book."

"Applique Outside the Lines is a delightful book that helps you create artistic quilts that are absolutely lovely. It is well written, with easy to follow instructions and a lot of great tips & photos. This book also makes a great Christmas gift, but I highly recommend all quilters, and anyone interested in learning to quilt, buy copy. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!"

“I hate rules. But when I don't follow the ules, I get a damn speeding ticket. When Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins don't follow the rules, they get wonderfully fun and whimsical free-wheeling appliqué that is fabulous! I've been a huge fan of Piece O'Cake Designs forever, and there is a just nothing, but nothing in this book that doesn't appeal to me. I want to make all of the projects! (Ahem…maybe, I want to have them all is more to the point.) This book has eight colorful and engaging quilt projects with no rules! Can't beat that! Should you buy it? I love this book. Buy it! Just leafing through the pages and dreaming of making some of these projects will keep a smile on your face and get your through the shorter days of autumn.”
