"If you enjoy creating traditional blocks but want to give them a contemporary twist, you'll like the visual effects created in Shifting Perspectives. Author and designer Lorraine Torrence presents a different way to showcase a common quilting look: repeated blocks. A clear plastic lens with twenty-five etched squares called the Fresnel lens (also known as the Multi-View lens), shows repeated images of a scene viewed through it, shifting that scene to create interesting abstractions. Lorraine shows how looking at a block through the lens creates twenty-five slightly different blocks and a new set of design possibilities.

Walking the reader through the process, Lorraine offers larger sample blocks and shows different ways to trim them to size so each block is unique. Joining these blocks gives even the most traditional of patterns, the Ohio Star, an updated look. She explains what type of blocks work best for the process, how to shift the image using the lens and then recereate that shift by trimming blocks, and how to sew the blocks together to create the optimal design impact. She even suggests using the trimmings in the border, which both unifies the look of the quilt and minimizes waste. The kaleidoscope feel of the quilts Lorraine makes is sure to whet your creative appetite to try something new!"

"For traditional block quilters interested in breaking away from tradition, Lorraine Torrence shares her concept sparked by the use of the Fresnel lens. Also known as the Multi-View lens, the lens multiplies your original block into many smaller blocks and each is shifted slightly, i.e., the perspective shifts. By using either a traditional block design or one you create, you will end up with an original quilt design. The book includes a Multi-View lens so you can get started right away."
