Fabric and quilt designer Murphy brings her bright, modern aesthetic to holiday sewing in this collection of Christmas-themed projects. She begins with nine quilts, most of which are the perfect size for snuggling on a cold winter’s night, and then follows with nine home décor projects. For many of the patterns, especially the quilts, a different choice of fabric or color palette would make them more suitable for everyday use, rather than as holiday gifts. Several of the projects incorporate intermediate or advanced techniques, such as precision piecework and hand or fusible appliqué, but directions are provided. VERDICT Holiday projects are ever popular, and summer is the time to start thinking about handmade gifts. Modern quilters will enjoy this fun collection.

The patterns look super easy to follow as the instructions and diagrams are so clear. This book is full of the kind of projects that I would love my house to be full of but never get around to making as I leave Christmas Projects until the last minute. Not this year though, my mid-year's resolution is to get some of these projects made in time for Christmas.

It’s a really great book and has 18 sewing projects. One of my favorites is this “Countdown To Christmas” quilt. It’s the cutest little advent calendar! I love the chunky rickrack and all the little packages. This quilt is made using 2 charm packs and a small amount of extra fabrics for the borders. Instead of using the traditional numbers to countdown the days until Christmas, Amanda made yo-yos! What a great modern twist. The yo-yos are stored along the bottom border of the quilt and are added to the packages as the days go by. The book is full of fun Christmas projects done in bright colors … so refreshing! Besides all the beautiful quilts, there is a pattern for some patchwork stockings and a three-dimensional tree. It’s a must have for a modern holiday.

This book has 18 projects - 9 quilts + multiple other projects such as a tree skirt, stockings, pillows, stuffed trees and a cute advent calendar with pockets. Each project is gorgeous and full of beautiful details. All of the projects in the book have a beautiful, contemporary take on traditional blocks, patterns and motifs. Truly, every quilt in the book is stunning. The patterns are also well written and beautifully diagrammed.

The book is packed with quilts but you could take many of the designs and easily turn them into pillows, table runners and more. I love the clean lines of the trees and the variety of sizes. If you are looking to get a head start on some holiday sewing, definitely pick up a copy of Modern Holiday. It's a great book!

This collection is composed mostly of quilt inspired designs, but it does include stockings, pillows, coasters, an Advent calendar, very cool and easy to make three dimensional Christmas trees, a table runner and even a tree skirt. You are bound to find something to spark those creative juices in this well-written, beautifully photographed, and well laid-out book. Being a novice quilter myself, I found the instructions to make traditional blocks such as Dresden Plates, hexagon and Flying Geese to be very easy to follow, even with no prior knowledge of these techniques. It is the use of these very traditional blocks in innovative ways that make Modern Holiday such a great quilt book.

Christmas holidays will be here before we know it. Amanda Murphy is offering 18 ideas for a handmade Christmas, whether that's a quilt or home dec item. You will find lots of fun ideas, including her Christmas Gifts quilts featuring three dimensions with bows made from buttons or yo-yos and the use of Dresden blocks refashioned as wreaths. I loved the Holiday Forest quilt filled with triangular trees and snowflakes in four designs. The home dec patterns included a fun Advent package calendar, Christmas stockings, and pillows using the four snowflake templates. It was fun to see the designs done in non-traditional colorways.
