Geta Grama is a self-taught quilter who lives in Romania. Her remote loca- tion necessitates that she make do with what quilting supplies she had on hand. Out of those circumstances Geta developed her own Shadow Trapunto technique. She originally set out to use cotton batiste but could not find any so she used organza instead and a 5 layer quilt sandwich. Her designs are quite intricate and reflect her engineering background. You will find very well written and illustrated instructions that take you step-by-step through the process. Once you discover how easy this method is you will want to take on many of the 30 projects found in the book, these include: wall hangings, pillows, table runners and postcards. The patterns in the book will need to be enlarged but there is also a CD included with the book that contain all the patterns. Geta recommends you print your pattern from the CD rather then enlarge from the book as your lines will stay thinner. All patterns on the CD are in PDF format. If you are looking for a new technique to try, pick up this book and give Geta’s Shadow Trapunto technique a try. Price $27.95

Review By: Judy Bowers,    - April 3, 2012
"Shadow Trapunto Quilts" by Geta Grama shows a new process of an old technique.  When I was younger, I was taught to do shadow quilting, and I tried it-not too exciting or something that I'd want to base a career on.  I remember making a white quilt with pastel colors under a piece of sheer fabric. Grama's technique of Shadow Trapunto Quilts is almost a complete opposite.  To make this quilt, you need a light colored piece of tulle, thick polyester batting, a dark background and the regular batting you normally use, and a quilt backing. To review this book, I actually made a sample of a small quilt for my blog.  I followed the instructions in Shadow Trapunto Quilts, and the technique that is used in all of smaller quilts in the book.  The most time-consuming and stressful for me is cutting the batting away from the tulle.  I did manage to accidentally cut the tulle.  Grama allows for mistakes, and the tears are able to be mended in the quilting phase. Shadow Trapunto Quilts has designs for several small quilts and they are all beautiful and intricate.  Grama's technique is one worth trying and the trapunto (making a design puffy and raised) is amazing.  Certainly, give it a try!

Review By: Jennifer Trollope,   Fabrications Quilting for You - June 19, 2012
Acheive old-world style with this innovative technique, which combines the expertise of trapunto with shadow quilting, giving you two for the price of one. For those not familiar with trapunto, it is a very old technique whereby you "stuff" areas of your work to give it greater loft or relief. There are five layers to the projects in this book as opposed to the normal three in standard quilting. The layers from top to bottom are organza, trapunto motifs made from batting, background fabric, batting and backing and the white design of the quilt top is made from the organza and trapunto motifs placed on the familiar quilt sandwich. This is a facinating read and the starter projects are small enough for anyone to give the technique a try. Try somehting new today as Jamie Oliver would say!

Once you learn a relatively simple technique, explained clearly by the Romanian engineer-turned-quilter author, you'll have a hard time deciding which of the 30 elegant projects to start first. Includes a CD with full-size patterns.
