When Jessica Levitt set out to write her book, she challenged herself to create projects that used both designer prints and solid colors. What sets the projects apart is that she uses a full range of colors. To me the modern quilt movement quilts seem crisp and fresh because of the white or lighter backgrounds. Many of Jessica's quilts used dark backgrounds or dark accent pieces. For those unfamiliar with color, she includes a basic discussion of color theory and quiltmaking. The 16 projects range from full-sized quilts to a quilted camera case. As someone who has been quilting many years, it was also fun to see a string quilt. Look for the book at your favorite book retailer. Here's a link to Amazon if you would like to learn more about the book.

I just fell in love with the cover of this book. It's the interplay of colours - sumptuous yet totally unexpected. It might have started with love at first sight, but as I went through the book, I realised this was a lasting love affair not a passing fancy. You'll find 16 projects that combine fabulous fabrics with style. Jessica has terrific colour sense and I love her work. I also love the fact that it is not all quilts but the seven quilts there are could be the seven deadly sins as you will lust and more. There is a great apron, so you can look great cooking dinner. In fact it would not take too much effort to turn it into a skirt. Also a table runner, roomy bag and another smaller bag, two stylish cushions, camera case, wall hangings that will be the focus of attention and a wall pocket to keep the place tidy. All the instructions you need in an easy to read format plus beautiful photos. Just in case you don't get the idea yet - I loved it and cannot wait for another Jessica Levitt book, please. This is one you should buy now.

"“Modern Mix” by Jessica Levitt. Jessica invites the reader to step out of their comfort box and try something new. Perhaps a new technique, fabric or a color you would not normally use and create art that is functional. I like the focus on combining a favorite print fabric with a lush solid, so often we forget about solids. Jessica presents lots of fun projects to use your prints and solids including seven quilts plus pillows,
bags and other home decorating projects. You will also find informa- tion on how to best integrate your fabrics as well as a section of basic quilt making. The many illustrations that come with each project help you understand the construction. The quilts have a contemporary style and I found several I can’t wait to make. Quilters and sewers of all skill levels can find something in this book."
Review Quilt Trends - April 1, 2012
The Modern quilt movement is flourishing! This movement, which is geared toward both sewing enthusiasts and crafters alike, emphasizes the use of contemporary fabric and simple - sometimes improvisational - instructions. Modern quilts are meant to be funtional, sophisticated, and, as self taught designer and fiber artist Jessica Levitt says "....practical. You'll end up with art you can use."
Jessica's Modern Mix is a book filled with fabulous ideas large-scale prints and negatice space. "A printed fabric is so eye catching," states Jessica. "And when it's paired with the right solid, the result is brilliantly graphic." Modern Mix has something for everyone - quilts, home decor, and fashion accessories...16 original prijects in all, including a chapter on quilmakting essentials. Some basic skills and a little sewing experience are required, but most of all, Jessica encourages ingenuity and a willingness to step outside one's comfort zone. The projects are ideal for using up srcaps and large, colorful prints; the addition of solids and muslin gives any quilt a clean, modern look that you just can't get when using only prints.

A beautiful contemporary quilt bookBook Review: I fell in love with the quilt on the cover of Modern Mix (Pebble Road Quilt) and was thrilled to see so many more projects in the book that I also love. Modern Mix is written with beginner to intermediate quilters in mind, author Jessica Levitt shows the basics of quilting with clear instructions and beautiful pictures and diagrams to follow. Modern Mix focuses on combining solid colors with prints in quilts, and Jessica Levitt does a beautiful job. The book contains 16 total projects, including seven quilts, a tablecloth (which could be made into a quilt), two bags, two pillows, an apron, a hanging file folder (LOVE), wall panels, and a quilted camera case. Her quilts are gorgeous, and with her clear instructions, they look easy to assemble and finish. I only wish I would have had this book before I started my boys' quilts, the Traffic Jam quilt (with the adorable car and truck appliqués) would have been perfect for them! I also love the Gradations Bag and will make it as soon as I am done with my current projects. In my opinion this book is great addition to any modern quilter's library.
