Position Available: Copywriter

Position Reports to:
Marketing Manager, Sales & Marketing Department, in-house

Statement of position goal:
Responsible for writing the best possible text to communicate information, promote, persuade, and sell products that help reach or exceed annual sales projections.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attends and provides creative input at pre-publication meetings to extract key selling points, title, and copy direction to best sell the product
  • Composes sellable copy for C&T products and services and proofreads all marketing and sales collateral including, but not limited to:
    • sell sheet/product copy for catalogs
    • product packaging, product internal copy
    • back cover copy
    • specialty brochures and newsletters
    • press releases
    • advertising copy and ad headlines
    • special promotional pitches for accounts including special sales offers, flyers, sales pitches to craft-related television shows
    • e-mail newsletters and broadcast emails to opt-in mail lists for consumers, authors, accounts
    • web content, including website copy, content for blogs, podcasts, or social media marketing
  • Researches competitive and comparative title information for the book trade
  • Edits lesson plans created for each product by authors
  • Sends support materials to authors for securing testimonials for book covers, edits text, and handles all processing details (testimonial permission forms, promo invoices, etc.)
  • Maintains publicity records of hits/success data

Requirements:

  • 3+ years' copywriting experience
  • Applicant must provide evidence of ability to write cogent marketing copy that sells product and demonstrates difference between descriptive copy and sales copy
  • Computer skills: proficiency in Word, Excel, FileMaker, Powerpoint
  • Knowledgeable about social media and how to write appropriately for blogging, podcasts, etc.
  • Project management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under deadline in a fast-paced environment
  • Publishing experience preferred
  • Craft experience highly desirable -- position requires sufficient industry knowledge to determine competitive and comparative titles for market position and sales support
  • Energetic, team-player motivated to help grow business and reach new markets
  • Must show samples of work and take a copywriting and proofreading tests
  • Bachelor’s degree (in marketing, journalism, or public relations preferred)

Position: Sales Account Representative

Statement of position goal
Sales Account Representative generates new sales and provides excellent customer service to the retailer (shop) customer and prospect groups in assigned regions to meet or exceed sales projections by territory. Annual sales goals for each SAR are established as part of the company’s annual sales projections. This position is a member of the sales and marketing department and reports to the Sales Manager.

Job Responsibilities

  • Generates sales from new and existing customers, expands value-added services, develops new markets, and qualifies prospects within assigned regions
  • Generates reports from account database weekly to determine call sheet and track results
  • In conjunction with other sales reps, creates new and refines existing call scripts
  • Manages customer relationships in assigned regions with personalized service, upselling techniques, professional communications, and accurate record-keeping
  • Utilizes tools and processes for selling, time management, reporting, and overall organization
  • Reports on the assigned regions’ growth (sales and prospects) monthly
  • Sells at regional and/or national trade shows and conventions
  • Assists with tradeshow set up and/or tear down
  • Educates self on competition, current industry trends, and general product knowledge
  • Actively participates in department meetings – gives sales input, assists with problem-solving
  • Maintains high level of customer satisfaction
  • Qualifies sales potential of all customers and prospects on an ongoing basis
  • Supports other sales regions as needed during absences
  • Assists with general S&M projects as needed

Requirements:

  • 2+ years' sales experience (preferably wholesale)
  • Inside sales experience; call center selling experience and highvolumesales experience a plus
  • Strong computer-knowledge including MS Office; ability to manipulate the data to determine how to prioritize and focus sales calls to maximize $$
  • Craft experience preferred
  • Ability to work under deadline and to multi-task
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to follow tasks through to completion

Position: Acquisitions Editor

C&T Publishing has an immediate opening for Acquisitions Editor based in our Concord, CA office.

The Acquisitions Editor will provide strategic direction for our publishing program, acquiring 50 printed titles and 5 DVDs annually. Additional, s/he will ensure that all titles are contracted in keeping with the acquisition team's publishing strategy.

The Acquisitions Editor develops new authors, manages existing relationships to develop new book opportunities, develops series concepts, leverages repackaging opportunities of existing content, assists in the development of digital publishing, and manages the proposal submission and consideration process . Unlike other publishing models, the C&T Acquisitions Editor does not develop the books past contracting or follow the titles through the publishing process.

The successful candidate will have the ability to contribute new ideas for our acquisitions system and will have outstanding oral and written communication skills, with a well-developed ability to network. S/he will be goal oriented and creative as well as detail oriented and able to juggle multiple details while maintaining a big-picture strategic view. S/he will thrive working in a self-directed manner while still being an excellent team-player and leader.

Minimum 4 years publishing experience, 2 years acquisitions experience required. Quilting and/or craft market experience a plus.

Essential accountabilities include:

  • Develop proposals, consider unsolicited proposals, and solicit proposals to meet acquisitions goals and deadlines.

Position: Freelance Developmental Editor

Reports to: Project Manager and Editorial Director

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with authors, co-editors, Sales and Marketing, and Production staff in the development, and production of books and related products.
    For assigned books
  • Work with Publisher, Production, Sales and Marketing to develop the concept and planned execution of the book. Assist Acquisitions Editor in preparation of Appendix as needed.
  • Work regularly with author to develop book according to the planned concept, ensuring that final manuscript and supporting materials are delivered to C&T on time and conform to agreed upon concept. Schedule and critique sample material provided by author. Assist author in resolving issues related to book.
  • Arrange meetings as needed with C&T staff, including author when appropriate. Meetings can be held via conference call.
  • Edit manuscript for correctness, consistency, clarity, organization, and style, communicating with author regarding needed changes.
  • Schedule outside copyediting and proofing with Project Manager.
  • Prepare image log to identify and track images and image-related issues.
  • Prepare book map, laying out the flow of the book and relative location of text, photographs, and illustrations.
  • Coordinate with Technical Editor who is checking how-to instructions for clarity, consistency, and correctness.
  • Review sample pages ensuring that proposed design will work with material provided by author.
  • Obtain or assist author in obtaining all permissions for text, photos, and illustrations, as needed.
  • Review design rounds for Book Designer; check final edits before book is sent out for reproduction.
  • Coordinate with Technical Editor to prepare project guidelines. Arrange with Project Manager to hire quilters to make quilts and projects for books, select and obtain fabrics, and supervise quilt production, as needed.
    Other:
  • Track work and deadlines through database.
  • Communicate regularly with Project Manager on status of projects.
  • Freelance Editors are independent contractors, contracted on a per-book basis.
    Computer skills
  • Experience with Macintosh computers, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel a plus.

Position: Freelance Technical Editor

Reports to: Editorial Director

Job Responsibilities:

    For assigned books:
  • Consult with Production Assistant to develop book palette
  • Determine number and approximate size of illustrations to assist DE in preparation of book map
  • Give illustration and photo counts to Project Coordinator in preparation for Request for Quotes (RFQs)
  • Edit manuscripts to ensure that all project/process instructions are complete, correct, consistent, and reader-friendly, including: general how-to, materials and cutting lists, step x step instructions, templates, illustrations, and photos
  • Prepare illustrations for the Illustrator, review, and edit illustrations
  • Review how-to models for photography
  • Update image log for all illustrations and how-to photos
  • Work with Author, Illustrator, and Editors regarding suggested additions, deletions, or changes to the manuscript, photos, or illustrations
  • Secure Author sign off on all illustrations
  • Work with 2nd Technical editor doublechecking the manuscript to resolve issues.
  • Review Design rounds
