Excerpt: Luminous Landscapes

Project QuiltsHave you yearned to make a landscape quilt that captures your memories of a special place? It might be a holiday destination, a special place from your childhood, or even the view from your kitchen window. Where do you start? What are the key steps to making your landscape an achievable project?

The process of creating a beautiful landscape quilt requires making decisions about design and color, as well as accurate construction techniques and embellishing.

We all see the world around us in a different way. Even when we look at the same scene, we see it differently. Previous experiences, differences in how we physically perceive color, and our personal taste influence the way we view a scene. When you make a landscape quilt, you should try to capture not the actual landscape, but your personal perception of the scene. You may decide on true-to-life details or a more abstract form. Thus, a wonderful variety of interpretations of landscapes are possible.

Having worked as a special education teacher for fifteen years, I know that we all have different abilities, talents, and skills. I have endeavored to make the information in Luminous Landscapes easy to understand but still informative and detailed for those who enjoy the challenge of creating their own designs.
