Q: What should I look for when purchasing
a new sewing machine?
A: What to look for in a sewing machine for quilting...
- Perfect tension adjustment. You'll need the ability to adjust both the bobbin and the top tensions.
- Automatic needle stop. The needle should stop immediately rather than coasting one or two more stitches.
- Up-or-down needle position on commans.
- An easily controllable foot pedal, one that is not too sensitive or too difficult.
- A powerful motor to prevent the machine and foot pedal from over heating during long sewing sessions.
- Built-in variable-speed controlto control the stitching speed (optional).
- A clearly visible needle bar; you must be able to see the needle easily.
- Adjustable presser-foot pressure.
- High-quality feet and accessories made specifically for the machine: darning (free-motion) foot, walking foot, straight-stitch throat plate.
- A reputable dealer who can help with minor adjustments and who understands your technical needs.
Also...
- Ask for a demonstration
- Test any machines you're interested in using your own fabric, thread, and batting samples.
- Ask to try the machine out at home over the weekend
