Color Theme of the Day: Monochromatic Orange-Red

Posted by Deirdre Quirk on Apr 29th 2016

For today's installment of color theme of the day, we've chosen a monochromatic color scheme: orange-red and all of its tints, shades, and tones.

Wait a second, you're probably thinking. That doesn't look like a color wheel! For our monochromatic scheme, which relies so heavily for its interest on including many varieties of one pure color, we thought it would be more helpful for you to be able to see the color's range, rather than picked out by itself on the color wheel. Above you can see pure orange-red with many of its variations to its right and left. This helpful chart comes from  Joen Wolfrom's Ultimate 3-in-1 Color Tool

Orange-red is a color that demands your attention, but it can read as subtler or more dramatic depending on the tints or shades used. Often paired with neutrals to soften it, orange-red works wonderfully for any of your quilting, sewing, or other crafting projects!

This Two by Six Block, designed by Natalie Hardin for inclusion in Modern Blocks, freely mixes shades, tints, and tones of orange-red for a bold splash of color.

Paired with white and cream, a few varieties of orange-red are just the thing to add a modern country look to any room in your home with this curtain project from At Home with Modern June

Paired with gray and black, monochromatic orange-red goes sophisticated for The 3-in-1 Kiki Bag Pattern

A black setting and orange-red Snowballs on a big quilt—Mary Fons, author of Make + Love Quilts, certainly knows how to make a statement! Using scraps is a great way to get a variety of orange-reds in one project.
